According to the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), if you registered for national ID card 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 you’re to check if your National ID card is ready for collection. Those national ID card registered between 2012 – 2015 are ready for collection.
Updated 2020: The online NIMC portal, https://touch.nimc.gov.ng/ used for checking the status of National ID CARD is now National ID Card PRE-ENROLMENT portal. It can no longer be used to check the National Identity Card status. The service is no longer available online. Currently, to check if your National Identity Card is ready for collection, check the nearest state headquarters of national identity card enrollment centre.
The National Identity card (not the National Identification Number Slip) is a card that contains National Identity Number, a photograph of the cardholder, and a chip containing the biometric information of the holder. The commission in charge of enrolling and issuance of the national identity card to applicants is the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC).
The card is issued to citizens of Nigeria above the age of 16 or those who have legally lived in Nigeria for two or more years at point of enrollment.
After the enrolment for National ID card, several people experience a serious delay before collection of their national ID card. You wait and wait but will not receive either text message or email notification indicating that your ID card is ready for collection.
Worst, if you lose the mobile phone number you used in registering for National Identity; you won’t be able to receive an SMS notification at all.

In the past, you have to visit your National ID card registration centre, which is usually your enrollment centre to check the status of the National ID card. However, the internet has turn things around in recent years.
Online, on National Identity management commission ( NIMC) official website portal, you can resolve a lot of national Identity-card related matters; one of which is to check the status of your National Identity card.
Without wasting much time, let’s look at how to check if your National ID card is ready online and how to get it.
Check if your National Identity card is ready for collection
To check if your National Identity Card is ready If you registered for the National Identity Card;
- Log onto https://touch.nimc.gov.ng/, an official NIMC national ID card checking portal.
- Click on “proceed” button.
- Enter your First name, Last Name and last 6 digits of your National Identification Number in the column provided.
4. Hit the “Check Now” button to see if your National ID Card is ready. This is how to check if your National Identity Card is ready in Nigeria.

What to do if your national ID Card is ready?
Congratulations! If your ID card is ready
The next step you’ll take will be to visit your enrolment centre for collection.
If perhaps you no longer live close that enrolment centre, visit nearest NIMC headquarter for national ID card enrolment close to you and request for a transfer.
To request for a transfer, you need your National Identification Number. So, go with your NIMC National Identification number slip.
There are no charges for transfer at present. All you need to do is to fill correctly the card transfer form given to you to fill by the NIMC staff on the seat. When filling the form ask questions if you don’t understand anything on the form
What to do if your Nigerian national ID card is not ready?
If however, you received a notification that your card isn’t ready. First, cross-check again. Check your entry second time to be sure you made no mistake in any of your name(s) or National Identification Number.
If after that you still received a notification that your national ID card isn’t ready, then it really isn’t available. Wait Patiently and try again some other time.
Warning: You’re not to enrol twice for National Identity card, as it is considered a criminal offence to do by NIMC.
How long does it take to get a national ID card?
Once, you enrol for the National ID Card in Nigeria; you’ll be given a NIMC NIN slip. It may take several months to receive the permanent or plastic National ID card. Sometimes, years. No need to worry, the NIMC NIN slip given to you contains your National Identification Number (NIN). This number can be used for all transactions in Nigeria requiring identity verification.
